Thanks for covering this story. As an Iowa resident and occasional visitor to the Des Moines Art Center, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, I’m sympathetic to the artist’s desire to maintain her work in the long run. At the same time, DMAC’s concerns for the costs of maintenance and safety of visitors are certainly legitimate. Can any artist to expect that an outdoor installation will be maintained in a pristine state for all time? If so, there is a limited choice of materials and structural elements that can be expected to hold up. Iowa is visited by tornadoes, derechos, and other adverse climatic conditions, and given the trajectory of climate change, that’s not going to get any better. Is it reasonable to expect the museum to restore an outdoor installation, no matter the cost? How does that affect the overall operating budget of the museum and resulting limitations of what other art can be acquired and shown to the public? I hope the author would continue to explore these issues in the case of Miss vs. DMAC. There is likely much more here than is evident at first glance.

Fun facts about St Longinus:
“St. Longinus is the centurion who pierced the side of Our Lord while He was hanging on the Cross. St. Longinus, who was nearly blind, was healed when some of the blood and water from Jesus fell into his eyes. It was then he exclaimed “Indeed, this was the Son of God!” [Mark 15:39]. St. Longinus then converted, Left the army, took instruction from the apostles and became a monk in Cappadocia. There he was arrested for his faith, his teeth forced out and tongue cut off. However, St. Longinus miraculously continued to speak clearly and managed to destroy several idols in the presence of the governor. The governor, who was made blind by the demons that came from the idols, had his sight restored when St. Longinus was being beheaded, because his blood came in contact with the governors’ eyes.”

I am very jealous of that work space in Chicago. I would love to have that much space to work. But, then the tradeoff would be, I would have to move to Chicago. Yikes! I am currently in what used to be referred to as “sunny California.” After this past winter though, I guess we lost that tag. It’s been dark and cold and wet for too long. I still love looking at all the different work spaces from around the world.

Thanks for this informative article. Not to detract from this discovery, but from the photos, the two portions of the statue are not “halves” since there is a substantial middle portion missing. The top photo shows the head, chest, and the left upper arm. The bottom shows the lower legs with the hands resting on the knees. Unaccounted for are the belly and hips, lower left arm, entire right arm, and thighs. Keep digging!

Scott A. Small’s book, Forgetting: The Benefits of Not Remembering, describes the diagnostic use that Arcimboldo’s paintings inspired as a means of diagnosing autism. Those with autism take much longer to see the face as opposed to seeing only individual fruits and vegetables.

The idea, that the reader might get a good look at the content of Andre’s letter, was a good hook. It made me look! To me this was more about the author and her bond, kinship (?) with Mendieta and their shared geography and resulting journey. It wasn’t what I expected or wanted when I was teased with the preview. A dissection of the Eden allusion and how Cuba wasn’t and couldn’t be her Eden is all you are giving us?

Sikanders’s work is revered, beautiful and powerful. Unbelievable that a university would be so easily yanked around. What about those of us who would sign a petition in favor of showing both works? OMG. “Women’s Art” and women artists are two very different things. Valadon was not undervaluing women artists, she disliked that women artists of her time were expected to producing unchallenging, nonconfrontational, ‘pleasing’ art, aka “women’s art”.
Please refer to “Women’s Art”: The Myth in Our Western Social Construction” by Georgina Brainard. You must have skipped class the day that was being taught.
And to assume that they were unsupportive of each other simply because they didn’t work together is ludicrous. No one would expect the same of men working in different styles and genres. These were strong independent women working in a field dominated by men, so they chose to follow the painting styles they preferred, and that required studying under men.
The crack about ‘an old woman’ at the end was also very unnecessary.

I am torn. Who else will support ART and CULTURE, but the rich. Harming art harms me. I drive a car, try to recycle and try to act responsibly. Those paintings struck by tomato soup and split pea don’t deserve the pain. Will the attacks do anything to change the behavior of the oilmen or the petroleum industry? It might take other works behind closed doors or cut funds to emerging artists. Here, should I not go to the Kravis Center, the main entertainment hall? How pure are the protesters? Have they purged their portfolios of all suspected violators? Do they watch sports, use charge cards or eat meat? What do they propose in return for keeping the institutions open and free from violent disruptions.

Spike Lee will go down in history as my generation’s greatest filmmaker, storyteller, activist, and spokesperson for those without a voice. An exhibit like this would have gotten little attention had it not been a part a larger crowd attracting exhibition such as this one. I did not see one instance of street graffiti on the tower, just the same boring tagging one sees on commuter trains, bridges, etc. Simply breaking into abandoned buildings is neither artistic nor creative.
The beautiful mural peering from the corner of Matt Stromberg’s photo is far more creative and interesting. Perhaps he snuck it into the frame for just that comparison?

How long is too long? A fitting plaque in a public space makes sense, even after the object has been replaced, as a lasting gesture lest we erase history.
However, doing the same inside a museum clashes disastrously with reality. Leaving empty display spaces or empty walls with only a note saying that what was here was taken away for good reason denies the same opportunity to an artist whose work ought to be seen.
Was that sculpture you mentioned towards the end of the article somehow tainted by be placed there? Perhaps you felt the artist didn’t deserve representation? The art going public does not benefit from paying an entry fee to see an empty exhibit. In turn, the decline in visitors will cause people to lose their jobs, and possibly the closure of a museum, where a fast food chain, or other commercial venture will surely take its place. Soon enough there won’t be any places left to patrol, and your job here will be done.

Is this really the world you want to live in? Denying artists and everyone else the pleasure of art and culture to in order to make a statement?

I am horrified that you find satisfaction in a neglected cemetery. One would hope that the residents have paid for their sins and may rest in peace.

Or could it be – simply – that Brueghel finds both extremes equally ridiculous? Neither the butcher nor the skeletal woman are particularly attractive.
Also, not a word about humor?
The (possibly) irate man emptying a chamber pot on top of revelers carousing below his window. The befuddled man surveying the scene from the comfort of his window sill. Etc.
And on a darker mode: The people holding whips to play with spinning tops in contrast to the flagellants holding whips to chastise themselves; the “dancing” amputees and the dancing five-some.
Humankind’s foibles; extreme, vulgar, joyful and funny!

I know, things abroad never have been easy to understand from a certain US point of view.
